TooTallToby's CUSTOM MATERIALS - How to and FAQ

What are the material names and densities used in the TooTallToby challenges?

CUSTOM MATERIAL NAME

Note: In the TooTallToby challenges:

The density of 6061 ALUMINUM is the same as the density of 1060 ALUMINUM

The density of RED OAK is the same as the density of AMERICAN CHERRY

Why do we use custom material densities in the TooTallToby challenges?

At some point in your career as a CAD designer (or engineer), you’ll be tasked with assigning material attributes to your 3D models. This most commonly occurs when a customer asks you to provide the total mass of an assembly, based on real world materials (and densities) assigned to each of the components in the assembly.

While most 3D CAD systems (like SOLIDWORKS, Fusion, Onshape, and FreeCAD) provide libraries of materials with material properties predefined, you will often work with customers who provide you with custom material properties which do not match the material properties found in the “out of the box” library. At this point, you’ll be required to create your own, new, custom materials in your library, and assigned the specified custom materials properties.

Sometimes the customer will provide these specifications, and sometimes you’ll be tasked to find the material properties, and which point you can rely on resources like https://www.matweb.com/ to examine the properties of a wide variety of materials.

However, you’ll still need to create the materials, in your CAD software…

How do I create a new custom material in Fusion, SOLIDWORKS, Onshape, Etc…

The TooTallToby community has a Discord channel which is dedicated to the creation of CUSTOM MATERIALS in different CAD systems. I’m going to copy and paste some of these resources here, but over time these may go out of date, at which point you should consider visiting the #materials-tools channel, on the Discord

How to Calculate Mass in Shapr3D for TooTallToby Challenges:

Posted from the TooTallToby Discord in the #Materials-Tools channel

From Jerid Hill:

I use Shapr3d. It doesn't have weight calculations but it's a fairly good program. I created an html page that allows me to convert the weights over. If you want the html code, let me know me know and I'll send it to you. It's a basic calculator but it works well. Not sure many people would need it since their software would most likely have it built in.

Either way, here is my web url you can test it out: http://screenerschoice.com/myconvert.html

Again, let me know if you want the code, I'll gladly send it to you.

How to Calculate Mass in FreeCAD for TooTallToby Challenges:

In FreeCAD you can use the CENTER OF MASS tool to assign a custom property for material density to a model:  Everyone on the forums says "use the center of mass macro"

https://wiki.freecad.org/Macro_CenterOfMass

For more info on how to use this tool, take a look at this FreeCAD tutorial Playlist:  https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzMIhOgu1Y5fhIJJ3f6qfpUtpbJirCBxo

KateLeipold: Here are an inch and a mm template for Creo. The material files should live in the same folder. The template has a flat to screen annotation that will display the calculated mass, based on the selected material.
